Nashville, TN

We drove from Park City which was a very small town on the edge of Mammoth Cave south to the busy city of Nashville, TN.  We stayed at Two Rivers Campground only a mile or two from Opryland and the Grand Ole Opry.  We encountered lots more truck traffic than we had in the past.  This was the most expensive campground on our trip thus far.  Even with our Good Sam discount it was $48.50.  We have been trying to keep our expenses under $30 a night, but when you are near a big city there are few choices.  We parked on the street in downtown Nashville and took a tour of the Capitol building which was completed in 1859.  It is constructed of local limestone with Ionic porticoes.  It is the only Capitol building in which a person is buried.  William Strickland, the architect of the building and Samuel Morgan, chairman of the Capitol Building Commission are both entombed in the corners of the building.  President James K. Polk and his wife Sarah are also entombed on the grounds of the Capitol building.  There was no rotunda as in the other Capitols we have visited.    We could have done our own self guided tour, but Marcus and Caroline wanted to take the formal tour.  They asked several very good questions of the guide who was very knowledgeable.  We also visited the Tennessee State Museum nearby.  I was a wonderful hands on experience for all of us.
