Monuments and Memorials in Washington DC

We had a great time visiting Monuments and Memorials in our Nations Capital city.  We used the National Mall Junior Ranger Activity book as our guide.  We really do love the Junior Ranger programs the National Park Service does.  We may not always do all of the activities, but they are a great way to really get to know and understand special places in our country.  We drove and parked on the street in Washington.  Since it was Sunday most of the metered spots were free and did not have time limits.  We walked around the Tidal Basin to the Jefferson Memorial.  We learned about Jefferson (dads favorite president.)  Then we walked on to the FDR Memorial.  We learned so much about President Roosevelt and the difficult times our country went through. Caroline really enjoyed learned about his Presidency.   We learned about the wars our country had fought in and about the soldiers who had given their lives for their country…..our country.  We learned that ‘Freedom is not free.’  We visited the Lincoln Memorial.  We were excited to finally see President Lincoln after all the years of seeing him on the penny.  We talked about his roll in the Civil War (which is on our minds after visiting Gettysburg.)  We walked through Constitution Gardens and read all the names on the Memorial to the Signers of the Declaration of Independence.  As we walked the 555 foot tall Washington Monument was always in our view.  We learned about its construction and why there are two different colors of stone on the monument.  We completed our day with a visit to Arlington to see the National Cemetery.  Over 320,000 people are buried there.  We watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (which Marcus really enjoyed.)
