Fort Sumter, SC

We traveled from Hilton Head north to the Charleston area.  We camped at Lake Aire Campground in Hollywood, SC.  We took a ferry from Charleston to Fort Sumter over which the first shots of the Civil War were fired.  We learned how this fort was occupied by Major Robert Anderson and the Union troops at the start of the war.  The first shot was fired on April 12, 1861 from Fort Johnson a Confederate fort commanded by General P.G.T Beauregard.  No one was killed in the first battle.  The Confederates flew the Stars and Bars Flag over the fort from 1861-1863.  We learned about the cannons used there and how they changed with the development of new technology.  The pentagon shaped fort is made of bricks which were made on low country plantations in the area.  We completed the Junior Range program at the fort and visitor center.  We even saw a dolphin on the boat ride back.

Love your pictures, especially the kids. They have already seen a lot and a lot more to go.
