Gladys, Virginia

It was a long drive but we moved to Gladys, VA. We stayed at a nice Thousand Trails Campground there. We were right on a lake and had a great pool. We tried to bike on a tail near by, but things don’t always work the way you plan (flat tire, forgotten pedal, washed out trail.)

We are all learning so much about our country and why things are the way they are today. We enjoy learning about the Civil War. We visited Appomattox Court House National Historic Park. This is where Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered and General Grant wrote the terms of surrender. The Confederates stacked their arms(guns) and were given parole passes to return home. This is the place our country was reunited. While we were there a reenactment by some men from Pennsylvania was going on. It helped us understand what it was like to live during that time (how uncomfortable and unsanitary it was.) The reenactors really did a nice job of staying in character. We toured the home where Grant and Lee met to discuss the terms and the Tavern where the 300,000 parole passes were printed. We completed the Junior Ranger program which was a challenge.
