Charles Bulfinch who also designed the Capitol in Washington, DC designed the Maine State Capitol. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1829. The granite was hauled from Hallowell quarries by oxen. The building cost $139,000 to build and furnish. The dome is home to the “Lady of Liberty.” The interior has been added on to and remodeled several times over the years. We were seemed to be the only visitors in the building while we were there. Marcus and Caroline hunted for fossils in the stone floors of the Capitol. We found fossils of the Maclurite, a Crinoid Stalk, a Prasopora and a Stromatacereum. They all lived millions of years ago.
We stayed at West Augusta Kampground. It was on a beautiful lake. We went kayaking and found a couple of loons teaching their young to fish. They can sure stay under water for a long time. They weren’t afraid of us at all and were very vocal. They actually followed us back to the campground where Marcus and Caroline went swimming.
