Yorktown, Virginia

We spent the day at the Colonial National Historical Park in Yorktown. We learned about the role Yorktown played in the Revolutionary War. Marc, Marcus and Caroline participated in a cannon loading demonstration. Marcus was the Powder Monkey and Caroline was loader. Marcus and Caroline had fun earning a Junior Ranger Badge. We all enjoyed the film and museum. We saw a dining tent used by George Washington himself. We took a walking tour of Main Street and learned how town life changed after the war. Before the American Revolution, Yorktown was a thriving seaport. That changed when the armies used earthworks to fortify their positions. The American and French armies fired cannons on the British earthworks built in town. More than half of the buildings were damaged or destroyed. One hundred years later a Victory Monument was built as a memorial. In 1781 General George Washington commanding French and American troops defeated a British army. This was the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War. The victory secured independence for the United States of America. We also visited the battlefields and the Moore house where both sides met to negotiate a surrender. While we were there we also visited a National Cemetery where William Scott also known as the sleeping soldier of the Civil War is buried.
