The last time we were in Tunkhannock I added some books that my brother and I had enjoyed as children to our library (thanks mom for saving them all these years.) One was about a pirate and New Orleans. Marcus of course took a liking to it since it talked about the War of 1812. So while we were in the area we went to the Chalmette Battlefield. It just so happened this was the setting of the book. We all learned about the lesser known War of 1812. We found out why the American’s and British forces we fighting this war. The battle here along the Mississippi River made General Andrew Jackson a hero. Ramparts or mud walls were built along a canal which marked the narrow strip of land between the river and the cypress swamp. The battle lasted less than two hours. There were 2000 British causalities and only 13 American. We walked the battlefield and completed the Junior Ranger program, but most of all learned about what makes America what it is today.
Also on this site is the Chalmette National Cemetery where Union soldiers are buried.
