The Valley of Fires

I had read a post of another full timer who camped at Valley of Fires and we thought it would be cool to camp on the edge of a lava field. It was a very windy cold day, but walking out into the lava field was very neat. This 44 mile long lava field spewed from volcanic vents in the Tularosa Basin floor. It spread southward and covered the original gypsum. It is composed of two types of lava. The lava surface is so extremely rough and broken it is impossible to cross except on foot. Many plants flourish here in the soil that settled into the depressions of the lava. There are many animals and bird that make this their home. We saw a roadrunner while we were exploring. Some animals have developed abnormally dark coloring to blend in with their surrounding. (Just as animals evolved with light coloring in White Sands.)

This reminds me of Craters of the Moon National Park in Idaho.
