The Golden Gate Bridge

Grammy Red has always wanted to ride her bike across the Golden Gate Bridge

…..so that is what we did on a foggy day in San Francisco.102_1048

Joseph Strauss, the chief engineer had long dreamed of constructing “the biggest thing of its kind that a man could build.”   In the Golden Gate Bridge, he found that opportunity.  The construction began in 1933 and the bridge was open to traffic in 1937.IMG_0428

We are ready to ride across the 1.7 mile ‘International Orange’ bridge.IMG_0428

On the day we were there it was busy.

We rode to the first of the two towers that stand 746 feet above the water.

We continued on to the second tower and then to the other side of this amazing structure.102_1027

80,000 miles of wire was used in the construction.

The two massive main cables are 36 3/8 inches in diameter.102_1031After we reached the other side we turned around and rode back to explore the outdoor exhibits.IMG_0427

We learned about how the bridge was constructed to withstand wind and earthquakes.IMG_5850

We wished it hadn’t been so foggy, but maybe we will come back another day.

Now lets get on our bikes and head to Fisherman’s Wharf.
