Olympia, Washington

We parked our camper and walked to the Capitol building. We walked on a scenic path overlooking Capitol Lake and the southern tip of the Puget Sound. IMG_4396

The brick and sandstone dome rises 287 feet and is the tallest masonry dome in North America. The sandstone was unearthed in quarries near Mt. Rainier. The granite steps and foundation came from north of Seattle.

All the original lighting was created by Tiffany. The chandelier hangs on a 101 foot chain and weights over 5 tons. It was the largest chandelier ever created by Tiffany.

The 49 Senators vote traditional by voice. The original desks are made of mahogany.

In the House Chambers 98 representatives are elected every two years. The desks are constructed of walnut. There are Pacific Rhododendrons, the state flower woven into the carpet.

There are many representations of President George Washington throughout the building. Our favorite was this statue. Tradition says you should rub his nose for good luck!
