Mendenhall Glacier

During our stop in Juneau we took a bus to the Mendenhall Glacier. It was about a thirty minute ride. We watched a film about the glacier. Glaciers form when the moist sea air flows toward the mountains. It rises and cools and releases snow and rain. Over 100 feet of snow could fall each year here. Year after year snow accumulates, compacting underlying snow layers from the previous years into glacial ice. As the glacial ice continues to build gravity pulls the ice down the slope. The glacier slowly scours the bedrock and grinds down everything in its path. When the glacier retreats the wind plants the barren ground with spores of moss and seeds. Eventually trees and plants begin to grow. After many years spruce and hemlock make up the forest. This provided homes for many plants and animals. The day we were there we saw several mountain goats on the rocks near the glacier and other visitors that day saw a mother bear and her cubs.
