The Animals of Yellowstone

Why are all these animals here?  In 1872, when President Ulysses S. Grant signed an act to make this a national park it protected it for future generations.  The land was protected because of the amazing physical features like the geysers, but the animals were also protected!  We had a great time exploring the park and attended two ranger presentations on animals.  The first was on bears and the second on coyotes.  We completed the Junior Ranger Program and made maps of all the places we went and animals we saw.  We learned about the differences between black bears and grizzly bears and how coyotes are really very much the same as us.  We saw eagles, osprey, elk, geese, ravens, Clark’s nutcrackers, yellow bellied marmots, mule deer, magpies, chipmunks and lots and lots of bison!  On our last day in the park we parked our truck and walked to see a petrified tree.  When we got back to the truck a gentleman was looking through a scope at a field in the distance.  He generously asked if we would like to take a look.  He lowered his scope so we could peer through and what did we see?  A mother black bear and her two brown cubs.  It was one of the highlights of our visit.  It the pictures you can see an elk near the mother and her cubs.  The man felt she was trying to distract them from her nearby calf.

  2. Yellowstone is one of our family’s favorite places! Did the ranger tell you this way to tell the difference between a black bear and a grizzly? When you are out in the forest and come across a bear and it chases you up a tree, then eats you, it’s a black bear. If it just knocks the tree over and eats you, it’s a grizzly bear. 😉
