Some Fulltime Family friends planned a great experiment with Mentos and soda. They taught us that this reaction is not chemical (which is what we thought,) but physical. The Mentos physically block the bubbles from escaping from the bottle until there is so much pressure built up it causes an explosion of soda. Not unlike a geyser.
Each child was able to try this experiment on their own. We all used our critical thinking skills to figure out the best way to get the Mentos in the bottle quickly without them being forced back out.
It was great to see all of the kids thinking out of the box about the best way to accomplish this task.
By the end, after everyone had taken their turn, they had mastered the art of effectientely getting the Mentos into the bottle and causing a large geyser and some wet children.
What a great time spent with friends learning about science, problem solving, cooperation and just having fun!
